Here's everything new subs need to know about Sub Teacher Source and the schools we work with.
Company Overview
Sub Teacher Source is a national educational staffing agency connecting high quality substitute teachers to public, private, and charter schools. Our state of the art absence management system and staff of educators separate us from other agencies.
Industry Specific Staffing (ISS) was founded in 2008 as a full-service staffing organization. In 2016, Sub Teacher Source was launched as a division of ISS to fill a much needed void in the substitute teacher staffing segment in Michigan. We are now quickly expanding across the U.S.
Call Offs, Last Minute Cancellations, and No Call/No Shows are UNACCEPTABLE! You will be placed on our “Do Not Use” list.
Non-Negotiable #1
No Call/No Show & Cancellations
Scenario: You have accepted your first assignment with Sub Teacher Source, but you forgot you already had an appointment scheduled on the same day.
What should you do?
A) Cancel the STS assignment and go to your appointment.
B) Keep the STS assignment and reschedule your appointment for another day.
Non-Negotiable #2
Late/Tardy to Work
Scenario: As you are headed to work, you experience heavy traffic due to an accident. You are directed to take a detour that will increase your drive by 20 minutes.
What should you do?
A) Inform the school office staff that you will arrive 20 minutes later than expected.
B) Inform the Placement Team that you will arrive 20 minutes later than expected.
Non-Negotiable #3
NO Touching at School
There are NO EXCEPTIONS!
-
Avoid all physical contact with students and their belongings.
-
Avoid all forms of touching (even if demonstrating in gym or at recess, have students demonstrate with other students)
-
Avoid power struggles with students that could lead to an altercation (do not provoke or engage with students. Follow the school’s protocol for handling misbehavior)
Non-Negotiable #4
Cell Phone Rules
-
Cell phones should ALWAYS be on silent and should NEVER be visible.
-
You may ONLY use your cell phone during your prep and lunch breaks.
-
Do NOT take pictures or videos of any students for any reason.
Non-Negotiable #5
Classroom Management
- NEVER allow students free reign in the classroom. As a professional substitute, you are expected to monitor and manage classroom behavior.
- ALWAYS take attendance and follow the teacher’s sub plans (if you were not provided with any plans, check in with the office staff and they will assist).
- ALWAYS be engaging and focus on student learning.
- ALWAYS leave the classroom cleaner than it was when you arrived.
Scenario: Students have been instructed to complete a worksheet. Some children are exhibiting off-task behavior. Students are talking to their peers excessively and are not following the teacher’s instructions.
What should you do?
A) Perform a call-and-response “attention getter.” For example say “Class, Class?” and the students will respond “Yes, Yes!” Once you have their attention, review the assignment and expectations.
B) Raise your voice and tell students to stop talking and get back to work.
C) Continue to sit at the desk and observe the students from the front of the room. If they don’t get too loud, all is well.
Non-Negotiable #6
Unprofessional behavior will NOT be tolerated!
- DO dress professionally and maintain clean hygiene.
- DO treat every job like it’s a job interview.
- DO be aware of your tone of voice, your demeanor, and how you conduct yourself.
-
DO NOT call a student anything other than their birth name.
-
DO NOT refer to a student as slow, dumb, or incompetent.
Communication Expectations
- Placement is your main point of contact for reporting when you will be late, last minute call offs, resigning, coaching, etc.
- Placement can be reached by phone or email during our business hours of 6am-6pm Monday-Friday EST.
- Placement is not for asking what assignments are on the schedule board or when more will be added. Schools input their own requests based on their needs.
- Payroll handles all questions related to your paycheck and tax documents and can be reached at payroll@isscompanies.com
Scenario: You woke up at 6am feeling ill. You know you are too sick to work. The reporting time for your assignment is 7:45am.
What should you do?
A) Contact your recruiter and let them know you are unable to work your assignment due to illness.
B) Contact the Placement Team and let them know you are unable to work your assignment due to illness.
A sub must report any job concerns directly to STS at placement@isscompanies.com or (877)356-3450
*Email is the best way to reach us!
Communicating an Incident
If you ever get injured while at a school, go see the school nurse right away and definitely before leaving the school. In addition, email placement@isscompanies.com with a detail on what happened from start to finish so we can assist.
Resigning
If you must leave your service with STS, it is company policy that you provide a written notice through email of your desire to end your service, the last date you will be available, and the reason for your resignation. This notice must be sent to placement@isscompanies.com.
If you are in a long-term position, it is company policy that you fulfill the term of your assignment, or at a minimum provide a two week notice. For a building sub or floater position, we require a 1 weeks’ notice resignation from the assignment so that STS may secure a replacement.
